I went to the tanning show in Las Vegas when I knew I was going to open a tanning salon. I went from booth to booth, studying, writing notes down, talking to each bed manufacturer for extensive hours. It's a really big decision, making a tanning bed purchase. As I sat in my room that night going over everything I had seen. I had come to the conclusion that there was no other choice but Puretan. Puretan was always courteous and polite, not pushy. There were no gimmicks used on me. They simply stated what they were.
After 5 years in business and 6 new tanning salons opening in a 5 mile radius of me, I am expanding my salon from 9 puretan beds, to 17. I have different levels from the Impact, Circe, Ellipse III and Quantum stand-up. All of these make my salon the best tanning salon in the area. While I was the only tanning salon in my area for 6 months, 6 more opened up due to increasing growth in the area. I still have remained untouchable! Some customers tried the newer salons only to come back complaining that they never got the tan that they got with my beds! Tanfastik / Fort Wayne, Indiana Clients, Tom Brookshire and David Pequignot, opened their Tanfastik salon in Fort Wayne, Indiana, just over a year ago.Since its inception, Tanfastik has been doing fantastic business, serving a customer base of 4,200 and growing!
"We feel that our success can be attributed to a few key points; an equipment and marketing plan, a clean salon with a great staff, and proper advertising," said co-owner Brookshire.
Tanfastik opened its doors in March, 1999, exclusively with Puretan equipment: six St. Croix 28-lamp units, two 30-lamp California models with facials, one 42-lamp Ellipse III with facial, and one Quantum 851 vertical system.Due to the rapid influx of business, four more Puretan systems were added to accommodate the salon's increasing, "walk-in only" client base. Puretan's copyrighted marketing program, Tanning For Profit, is also instrumental in Tanfastik's success says Brookshire.
"We are very satisfied with the program's results. Our clients love it as it is a flexible plan that offers something for everyone." Brookshire credits the salon’s above-average numbers to the program, noting that competitive research indicated Tanfastik’s profit to be approximately 40% higher.
Tanfastik's great staff, supervised and trained by store manager Lisa Pryor, has built the facility's impeccable reputation. They mirror Tanfastik's focus on customer service and quality.With this in mind, the team abides by two rules: (1) Always project a good mood as nothing plausible comes from negativity; and (2) Aspire to be number one, never settling for second best. In addition to creating a fun atmosphere, the professional crew has developed personable relationships with all clients, consulting them regarding skin type, recommended tanning program, etc. Creative advertising has also played a significant role in Tanfastik's success. In fact, radio ads generated 1,000 customers within the first two months of opening.Events, such as radio personalities broadcasting live remotes, have drawn tanners to the establishment. A favored promotion invites individuals to visit the location and perform crazy stunts for free passes. Of course, word-of-mouth is the best form of advertising. Brookshire credits Tanfastik's employees, saying "The staff creates what the customer sees. puretan-ning power means pure success!

Beach Club

Beach Club,owned by Jennifer Bahr, is one of the fastest growing tanning salons in the Kansas City area. In August 1995, Bahr opened her first salon in Overland Park, Kansas, with six Puretan Arubas. Seven months later and seven minutes away, the second Beach Club opened its doors with 14 Puretan Arubas, and 12 more units were added to the initial store. Now, Bahr is expanding her second location with the addition of 5,300 square feet and 24 more Puretan systems - Arubas, St. Croix's, California 30/E's, an Ellipse III E/42, and a Quantum 851. The expanded "new" concept, scheduled to open on New Year's Day, will be sporting a new name, too..."Beach Club Tan Salon Maximas."
Beach Club's expansion was necessitated by a growing client base of over 13,000 tanners. Bahr feels the salon's success is due to its "no appointment necessary" exclusive offer in the Kansas City area, coupled with Puretan's quality equipment. Says Bahr, "Puretan lamps generate a beautiful, natural-looking, bronze tan that lasts two to three times longer than that of competitors, not to mention the skin has a moisturized glow." She further states, "There are three more things that set Beach Club apart from the competition ... an enthusiastic and loyal staff, an informed client base, and my commitment to be present at both salons each day." Beach Club's staff is committed to excellence, taking a personal interest in each client and ensuring they are informed regarding equipment and a tanning program that accommodates their needs. "I couldn't do it without them!" exclaims Bahr. Bahr believes in creating an identity for the concept. The salon's tropical theme is consistent with her "no high-pressures" sales policy, creating an ambience of warmth with mood lighting and flowers in each room. The relaxing atmosphere clearly attracts customers, allowing a "micro vacation" from the fast pace of everyday life. This theme will carry over to "Beach Club Tan Salon Maximas," a mega concept that will reflect Puretan's production and futuristic vision by offering the industry leader's upgrade products to its client base. Bahr feels Puretan products are "timeless" as their designs are classic, befitting of any decor. She further states, "puretan's service has been compassionate and dedicated; it definitely speaks for their commitment to the industry...I wouldn't deal with anyone else."

Tanning Hut

Tanning Hut, owned by Mike Armes and Teri Johnson, has made a major impact on its competitors in Meridian, Idaho. With a market size of approximately 25,000 and three other salons in the area, Puretan's quality products and business assistance have greatly enhanced the salon's success in the small community. Tanning Hut just completed its first year, offering four Puretan tanning systems to its clientele -- three (3) Aruba 24's, and one (1) Ellipse II. "Our Ellipse produces a good chunk of our sales gross, not to mention the price point is much more affordable," say owners Armes and Johnson. "Initially, we were a little worried, investing so much money in an upgrade bed, but if we had to do it over again, we wouldn't change a thing."
Tanning Hut owners also observed that the salon's Puretan products out-tan any other tanning system in the Meridian area. "Puretan and the company's excellent staff are the greatest! We know this because we checked out every tanning bed manufacturer before we made our buying decision." Armes and Johnson further noted, "If things keep going the way they are, we will be opening another salon within a year or so... and, yes, we will be choosing Puretan as our partner for success!"

Endless Summer Tanning Salon, located in Traverse City, Michigan, has enjoyed a booming business for over ten years. Owner, Jim Stewart, attributes his success to two things: (1) incomparable Puretan systems, and (2) a professional image. The salon hosts 27 tanning systems, and will be adding Puretan's Ellipse III with high-pressure facials in the near future. Further, research to expand the concept to multiple locations and introduce upgrade systems is underway.
Stewart emphasizes that customer service is a "gigantic" key to success. In addition to a personable staff and equipment that provides unequalled results, Endless Summer takes a personal interest in each client, consulting with individuals to ascertain their skin type, and making tanning recommendations accordingly. Says Stewart, "We are in the business of tanning, not burning, people." Follow-up with clients ensures that they progress to a tan via a gradual process. Further, the salon has a suggestion box to stay abreast of customer feedback. Stewart has worked exclusively with Puretan for the last nine years, and he acknowledges his great relationship with the company's president, Roger Brown. "Only two people call me Jimmy, my mother and Roger Brown," says Stewart. "Puretan is very advanced in their research & development and technology, and it shows in their products."

Rayz! Tanning Centre

Rayz! Tanning Centre, owned by Bruce Schoenfelder, has the privilege of being named in the "Top 250 Tanning Salons" by an industry trade magazine. The 27-bed salon offers 7 distinct levels of tanning and includes 11 Circe 33's and 3 puretan Ellipse's with facials. Located in Pittsburgh, Rayz is the largest salon in western Pennsylvania, and has the capability to serve over 1,000 customers per day. Rayz Tanning Centre was established in 1997, and has now grown to a staff of 12, boasting 61,000 tans last year.
Bruce chose Puretan systems for four reasons: reputation, durability, performance, and company support. Puretan beds are more than durable--he says they are "rugged, built like battleships" while maintaining high standards for customer comfort. When Rayz added Puretan beds in May 2000, customers were delighted. "They love them. In fact, getting them to go and tan in the [non-Puretan] equipment is difficult if a Puretan unit is open," Schoenfelder states. Rayz Tanning Centre continues to experience growth as they overlook no opportunity to provide "the finest tanning experience of any salon in [their] marketplace." Desert Tan, one of the fastest growing tanning salon chains in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, attributes their growth and success to key factors. According to Desert Tan, larger upgrade beds are in such demand that they are constantly booked. In fact, many of their current customers have paid memberships elsewhere, but continue to frequent their establishment. As a result, they are constantly booked and daily revenue has really increased.
